Women’s Rugby opens season with big win

On Saturday, the Wildcat Women traveled to Vermillion, SD, to take on the University of South Dakota in their season opener and came away with a 70-0 win.

It was a good run out for the team who are ranked #5 in the NCR DIII pre-season poll. A starting team of all returning players allowed Wayne to score early and steadily pull away from USD who were fielding many new players. Six tries and two conversions gave the Wildcats a 34-0 lead at the half. The second half saw six new players come off the bench and while the play was not as fluid as the first period the team was able to score six more tries with three conversions. The new players impressed with the standout being Genevieve Sovereign who scored a try and kicked five conversions.

Head Coach Bryn Chivers was very happy with the standard of play, especially the work of the forwards.  "It was a good first game for the team. The forwards looked very organized, and physically dominant, especially in the first half, and this led to the backs having quality ball throughout the game. We are working on new formations and patterns, and you could see clear commitment from the players to this new attacking shape. All the rookies made a contribution and that was exciting to see."

Mary McKulsky led all scorers with three tries, with Shae Wiederien, Esme Sacarias, and Toni Wachal scoring two apiece.
