John Schwarte is in his first year as the Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Campus Recreation at Wayne State College. In this role, he oversees the College’s Club Sports (elevated sports), including men’s rugby, women’s rugby, and esports. He also directs the auxiliary athletic programs in cheer and dance. Schwarte manages all athletic & recreational facilities and assists with the athletic game-day experience. On the campus recreation side, Schwarte oversees the intramural sports program and the recognized student organization - club sports.
Schwarte, who is in his 8th year overall at WSC, has significantly expanded recreational opportunities, adding nine club sport programs and achieving a 200% increase in participation. Under his leadership, the intramural sports program has also seen a 25% growth in engagement.
In 2024, Schwarte launched the WSC Rec app, designed to enhance student experience by centralizing recreational resources and opportunities. The app allows students to access facilities, sign up for events, and fitness classes seamlessly.
In 2021, he created the Recreation Services website, which highlights club sports through rosters, schedules, and regular news updates.
A pioneer of the esports initiative at WSC, Schwarte established the program in 2020 and developed “The Den,” a $100,000 dedicated esports arena. This state-of-the-art facility features 12 stations equipped with MSI CodexR2s which bolster the 5070s graphic cards, high end monitors, and peripherals.
In addition to his role, Schwarte and his wife, lead the Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle, fostering spiritual growth for Wayne State College athletes. He has served in this role for seven years.
A native of Harlan, Iowa, Schwarte earned a bachelor’s degree in health promotion with a focus on fitness management from the University of Northern Iowa in 2017. He completed his master’s degree in organizational management with a leadership emphasis at Wayne State College in 2023.
John resides in Wayne with his wife, Amber, and their three children.
