Bryn Chivers hired as Head Men's and Women's Rugby Coach

Wayne State College Campus Recreation Coordinator John Schwarte is thrilled to announce that Bryn Chivers, has been hired as our first full-time Head Men's and Women's Rugby Coach. With an impressive track record spanning over three decades, Coach Chivers brings a wealth of experience from various levels of the sport, from college clubs to national teams. Bryn takes over for long time rugby coach Darrin Barner, the founder and coach for 22 years. Coach Barner locked up 13 national titles for the Wildcat women and multiple final four appearances for the men - most notably two back-to-back national runner ups the past two seasons.

"I am very excited to hire Bryn as our next head coach," Schwarte said.  "Bryn and I share the same vision for the Wildcat rugby programs and am glad to have him on board to continue the tradition-rich history of both programs."

Bryn's journey through the rugby coaching landscape has been marked by significant achievements and contributions. His coaching adventure commenced at the University of Michigan, where he honed his skills and ignited his passion for nurturing rugby talent. This enthusiasm propelled him to coaching positions at other institutions such as the University of Illinois, and University of South Dakota.

At the national level, Bryn's influence has extended across borders. He notably coached the USA Rugby U20 Women's National Teams from 2005 to 2012. His impact continued as he assumed the role of coach for the Laos Rugby Men's National 7's team in 2013.

Bryn's dedication to elevating the sport is exemplified by his involvement with representative level teams. He has guided teams like the National Small College Rugby Association (NSCRO) women select sides in both 15s and 7s styles of play, the Prairie State women's select 7s team, and the Midwest women U23 select side. His leadership and strategic discernment have not only propelled these teams to success but have also contributed significantly to the growth of women's rugby.

Furthermore, Bryn served as the Director of Women's Rugby in the NSCRO (now NCR) from 2014 to 2020. During his tenure, he played a vital role in shaping the landscape of small college rugby and advocating for women's participation and recognition in the sport.

Bryn Chivers boasts an exceptional list of accomplishments, including clinching five USA Rugby national championships and securing one NSCRO national title. His coaching journey has transcended continents, as he has successfully led teams in international competitions on four different continents.

Educationally, Bryn's foundation is firmly rooted in his studies at the University of Wales and Newport College of Art in Newport, Wales.

"I'm not only excited to take the helm of these two successful programs, but also to collaborate with a school who are actively promoting rugby as a part of their vision for the role of recreational sport within the total college experience" said Bryn Chivers.

As we welcome Coach Chivers to our organization, we are excited about the new era of rugby excellence that his leadership promises to usher in. His passion for the game, combined with his extensive experience and achievements, positions him as an exceptional Head Coach who will undoubtedly inspire and elevate our athletes to new heights.
