Women's Rugby Rolls 49-0 Prairie State Selects in Season Opening Win

| By:
The Wayne State College women's rugby team returned to the pitch this weekend for the 2023-2024 season, and in typical Wildcat fashion, the team took home a 49-0 win in their season-opening match against the Prairie State Selects team. The game was played in Vermillion, South Dakota on Saturday, Sept. 16.
"We were getting used to having some new players in the squad," rugby head coach Bryn Chivers said. "Overall the returning players provided structure and organization the ultimately led to a total team win. I think it's an indicator for what we will see for the rest of the season where the success of the team won't be through individuals, but as the hard work of a collective strong group of players."
Chivers was impressed with the plays of many of his returners. "Phienix Svajgl provided speed in the back that led her to scoring three trys," Chivers said. "Maisey Clausen moved positions this year to play number eight, and she adapted quickly to the position. The strong running of inside center Alexis Dart deserves mention. She also crossed for a couple of trys."
The Wildcats will take the field for their first home match of the season this upcoming weekend on Saturday, Sept. 23 against the South Dakota Coyotes. The game will be held at the Soccer/Rugby complex on the campus of Wayne State College, with the start time set for 9:30 A.M.
"It's exciting to be taking charge of such a well established program with a history of success at the national level," Chivers said.
