Women's Rugby Ends Season With Pair Of Tough Losses

| By:
The Wayne State College women's rugby team's season came to a close this past weekend as the Wildcats suffer two heartbreaking losses to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks and the Northern Michigan Panthers.
On Saturday, Nov. 16, WSC met against the Fighting Hawks of the University of North Dakota in the Round of 16. It was a back-and-forth affair the entire game. A sluggish start saw WSC fall behind 12-0 in the early stages. They were able to take a lead and the teams continued to trade punches, but a series of injuries occurred, forced head coach Bryn Chivers to have to test his team's depth.
The team battled throughout the late stages, but a late push by UND allowed them to take the lead for good, as they snatched the win 41-40 in a thrilling match.
"We had the lead with ten minutes to go and I made the decision to go to the bench," Chivers said. "It's always a gamble and on this occasion, it didn't pay off.  All the women played their hearts out and ultimately this one was on me."
The Wildcats entered a consolation match against the Panthers of Northern Michigan, and an injury ridden group put forth their best effort, but despite taking an early lead, WSC lost the game 52-12 as their season came to an end.
The Wildcats will finish the season with a 3-4 record and bowed out in the Round of 16 in the national tournament.
