The Wayne State College men's wrestling team traveled to Mitchell, South Dakota to compete in the Dakota Wesleyan Open at Dakota Wesleyan University on Saturday, Nov. 9.
"Historically, the DWU Open is one of our toughest tournaments year after year," club President
Gavin Zoucha said. "While sometimes getting a hard-fought reality check comes through a brutal loss, it's tournaments like this one that really highlight what will and will not work. Seeing the silver lining through the heat of emotions and loss is one of the most important aspects of coming to these tournaments."
While there was no official team scoring, the combined efforts of the Wildcat wrestlers saw them finish a combined 15-22. Some notable individual performances where that of Zoucha (165 lb.), who went 2-2, including recording a fall in his third match over teammate Issac Ruwe. Vice President
Caleb Berg (149 lb.) went 3-2, including recording a tech fall in his second match.
Chance Sjulin (174 lb.) recorded a 2-2 record. Other wrestlers were able to grab at least one win.
Zander Baker (157 lb.) and
Micah Noel (197 lb.) each recorded a pinfall during the contest.
"Overall, the entire team is looking forward to getting back in the room to find tune some key points from the weekend," Zoucha said. "This ambition and excitement are exactly what we need for our next competition."
The team will be back in tournament action on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the annual Younes Hospitality Open in Kearney, Nebraska.
