Wildcat Wrestling Finish as Runner-Up at Regional Duals

    The Wayne State College Wrestling team traveled to St. George, Utah, this past weekend to take on the competition at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Regional Duals. 
    The team finished 6-1, winning all six of their duals before the championship match. "This was the most competitive I have ever seen our team," Coach Mike Borer said. "These were the best duals I have ever seen Wayne State College wrestle."
    They topped the UNLV Rebels 46-12 to open the tournament. Their next two matches, WSC swept through the Fresno State Bulldogs 59-0 and the Colorado State Rams 54-0. Some more challenging opponents followed in the Ottawa University of Arizona Spirit and the Western Washington Vikings, but the Wildcats battled to win both matches; 33-17 over the Spirit and 34-24 over the Vikings. The San Jose State Spartans were the final team in the way of a berth in the championship match, and WSC easily beat them 48-12. The Wildcats outscored opponents 274-65.
    The championship match pit WSC against the Utah Tech Trailblazers. In a hard fought contest, WSC fell just short fo a first place finish, losing to Utah Tech 33-16. The Wildcats finished the weekend as the runner-up for the tournament.
    "The mental aptitude this team showed this weekend is a direct representation of who we are," Zoucha said. "Staying composed in the face of adversity, wrestling through hardship, and having the discipline to stay focused on what's in front of us forged our weekend's results."
    Individual performers were highlighted by club president and captain Gavin Zoucha (165 lb.) and Zander Baker (157 lb.) who both finished the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record. Chance Sjulin (174 lb.) also finished undefeated at 5-0. Brodie Lane (235 lb.) finished 6-1 and Caleb Berg (149 lb.) finished 5-1 for teh tournament. Overall the team record individually finished at 52-16.
    The Wildcats will be back in action Mar. 1 in College Station, Texas, at the NCWA Southwest Conference Championships.
