Wildcat Wreslting finishes 1-1 during home triangular

| By:
The Wayne State College wrestling team posted a 1-1 record during their home triangular event on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The pair of duals are just the second and third duals hosted by WSC at Rice Auditorium. Last season, the Wildcats defeated Kansas State by a score of 26-11.
Club president Gavin Zoucha compliment his team's efforts and felt his group performed well on the day.
"With the atmosphere and energy from the day, everyone's efforts were compounding," Zoucha said. "The attitude on the day was the most tightly knit "team-feeling" I have felt in my career here. We are a team of class and respect, and I have a lot of respect for these guys for competing with the amount of heart they did. Everyone was classy, respectful, and constructive, and I think that is a direct result of their environment outside of competing."
The Wildcats beat the Colorado State Rams 27-21 in the first dual. The Rams had many open spots which benefited the Wildcats. The win was highlighted by a pinfall from Zoucha (165 lb.) and a win by decision from Chance Sjulin (174 lb.)
The match against the Iowa State Cyclones saw the Wildcats get out to a hot start. Jared Engel (125 lb.) and Hayden Williams (133 lb.) each were in compromising positions early but flipped the match on their opponents, each earning a pinfall to put the Wildcats out in front early. This pinfall was Williams' first of his collegiate career.
The Cyclones battled back out to a lead, and then Zoucha and Sjulin earned more positive results. Zoucha earned a technical fall and Sjulin recorded a pinfall. However, the Cyclones took over the match anf finished with a 41-23 win in the dual.
"The day ran very smoothly," Zoucha said. "We are very grateful for the opportunity WSC gives us alongside the staff and faculty that help us do what we do. We certainly would not be able to put together these events at such a high caliber without everyone's help."
Ariel Bryant also was able to wrestle in a women's contest, losing by pinfall.
The wrestling team hits the road this weekend to take on the field at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Regional Duals in Saint George, Utah. The tournament starts on Friday, Jan. 31.
