Men's Rugby Wins First National Title in Program History

Captain Trent Draper wins MVP

After falling short in the final over the past three seasons, Wayne State College delivered a commanding performance on Sunday to claim the program's first Division III national championship, defeating Holy Cross 27-8 at SaberCats Stadium in Houston, TX. The Wildcats showcased their dominance in every facet of the game, with standout performances and a clinical display of power and precision.

The tournament MVP was junior Trent Draper, Wayne State's powerhouse tighthead prop, whose bruising runs and unmatched work rate in the scrum propelled the Wildcats to victory. Draper's leadership up front set the tone early and proved to be a decisive factor in the championship win.

Wayne State wasted no time in applying pressure. In the opening moments, Holy Cross lost lock Patrick Halleron to injury and a yellow card after a head-to-head tackle, leaving the Crusaders shorthanded. Wayne State capitalized. After forcing a pair of scrum penalties, freshman flyhalf Logan Stevens slotted a penalty kick to give the Wildcats an early 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats continued to showcase their physical dominance with consistent forward play. Loosehead prop Aaron Venegas powered through for a short-yardage try after multiple Holy Cross penalties, aided by punishing carries from Draper that pushed the Crusaders back deep into their own territory.

While Holy Cross managed to respond with a penalty kick, narrowing the lead to 8-3, Wayne State's cohesive attack proved too much to handle. Openside flanker Diego Stefani broke the line and finished a seven-phase assault to extend the Wildcats' lead.

Though Holy Cross attempted to close the gap after a Wayne State penalty, the Wildcats' defense held firm. A quick restart by Holy Cross scrumhalf Christian Rosowicz set up their lone try, cutting the lead to 13-8. However, the Crusaders failed to take advantage of any additional opportunities.

Just before halftime, Wayne State faced a critical defensive stand as Holy Cross fullback Niall McKenna made a break for the try line. But the Wildcats' relentless tackling forced a turnover, preventing the Crusaders from drawing level.

The second half belonged entirely to Wayne State College. Stefani, powered over the line for his second try of the match, putting Wayne State firmly in control at 20-8.

While Holy Cross tried to mount a comeback, Wayne State's defense remained unshakable, shutting down every attempt. The final blow came in the 69th minute, when senior fullback Ricardo Pretorius crossed the try line, capping off an emphatic championship performance and securing the 27-8 victory.
