Wildcat Men’s Rugby Wins Opener versus Kansas University

The WSC men opened their season with a non-conference game against the Kansas Jayhawks and came away 50-19 winners. It was a good first test for the team who have moved up two divisions from D3 to D1AA this year. The new recruits impressed with starters Marlon Gururiro and Juan Diaz both getting on the score sheet, and there was a solid performance by Anthony Chambers off the bench.

Head Coach Bryn Chivers was happy with the play of the team overall, and the contribution of the new players. "It was a good first week despite some setbacks with players being unavailable for various reasons. We are working on some new things, with guys in new positions, and so the game wasn't as fluid as we would have liked, but there were plenty of positives to take away from the game. The new guys have integrated seamlessly into the team and impressed in their first outing as Wildcats. I have to give a shout out to James Mentele who came off the bench in the "A" game for his first game of rugby ever."

Tries: Asante Rikhotso (2), Francisco Rolon (2), Diego Steffani, Juan Cruz Diaz, and Marlon Guwuriro.

Conversions: Ben Donnelly (6)

Pens: Ben Donnelly (1)

The team also played a short "B" Side game that Wayne won 10-5. It was a good opportunity to get some playing time for everyone in the squad including a group of guys playing their first game of rugby.

Tries: Destin Shiado, Logan Stevens.
