The Wayne State College men's rugby team used two dominating wins in St. Louis, Missouri, to advance to their fourth straight Final Four.
On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Wildcats faced off with the No. 17 St. Thomas Tommies. WSC controlled the game from start to finish, posting a shutout until the Tommies scored in the closing minutes. Yet, it finished as a 37-5 win and a trip to the quarterfinals for the Wildcats.
They had to turn around and play the following Sunday, Nov. 24, and match up with arguably their toughest competition. Undefeated No. 2 Slippery Rock opposed the Wildcats, but all that did was make WSC play some of their best rugby this year. In dominating fashion, the Wildcats hand Slippery Rock their first loss and end their season with a 27-5 win to punch their ticket back to Houston.
WSC returns to Houston with aim to win it all this year after making the National Championship the past three seasons, but falling short in each try. The Wildcats are the only returning team to Houston from last year's field of four, and will be matching up with a familiar opponent in the No. 14 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.
"They had a lot of freshmen in our first meeting and they've clearly improved" Chivers said. "They beat the 2022 National Champion, Cal Poly Humboldt, in their regional final and that says a lot about their growth over the season."
Back in the first game of the season on Sept. 7, WSC ran right through the Mines 71-5. This time around, it will prove to be a much tougher fight.
The Wildcats and Orediggers square off for the right to play for it all on Friday, Dec. 13 in Houston, Texas, at SaberCat Stadium. The game is slated for a 12 p.m. start time. The winner will face the winner of the Holy Cross Crusaders and the Duke Blue Devils in the National Championship on Sunday, December 15.
