Spring 2025 Esports Season Kicks Off

| By:
The 2025 Spring Esports season is set to begin, with all five varsity teams competing for top placements. This semester, the Wildcats esports program has grown to an impressive 93 sign-ups, expanding its competitive reach across multiple titles. For the first time, Call of Duty will feature a JV squad, a testament to the increasing interest and investment in collegiate esports.

Wayne State College is hosting a LAN event this semester—the Cornbelt Classic—where Rocket League (RL), Overwatch (OW), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU), and Mario Kart 8 (MK8) will battle for Midwest dominance. But that's just the beginning. WSC will also compete in two additional LAN events:
  • March 28-29 – Overwatch and League of Legends (LoL) teams hit the road to Kansas State University in Manhattan.
  • April 12 – Rocket League, Valorant (VAL), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fight for qualification in the Northern Rift Championship, hosted by Minnesota State University in Mankato.
WSC now supports 17 different esports titles, with even more on the horizon. Recent additions such as Marvel Rivals and MLB The Show have further diversified the program. While sign-ups for this season have closed, students are still encouraged to engage with the esports community and connect with Head Coach Drew Kurtenbach for future opportunities. Under his leadership, the program has surged from 60 participants last year to over 90 this semester.

Call of Duty, Chess, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have all seen increased student participation, while established teams like Rocket League and Valorant continue to build on their playoff success.

Rocket League's roster includes much of the same, lead by Gabriel Dilley, with Jackson Fluckey and Rohan Oelofse. The sub this year is freshman Johnathon Sosa-Palencia.

Changes in the Valorant roster occurred in the off season, as the returning captain Markus Martin prepares to lead a mixture of new and returning players. Trey Thibeault and Avin Dean will represent the freshman this year, continuing their esports careers. Garrett Finke and Trevor Hoegerl round off the VAL team.

Overwatch has two teams this season, with the competition for a spot on even the OW gold team becoming even more stiff. Co - captains, Austin Schuller and Luz Cabrera will lead the season. Sebastian Rodriguez, Luke Hellbusch, and Christian Hemphill will round out what we know of the OW team this semester.
