The Wayne State College club volleyball team competed at the Midwest Plains Volleyball Conference Championships in Aurora, Illinois from Saturday, April 5 to Sunday, April 6.
This tournament started on Saturday and featured power brackets instead of pool play. WSC got matched up with the Missouri Tigers to open the tournament. After starting slow and losing set one 25-8, the Wildcats battled and won set two 26-24, before ultimately falling short in set three 15-8. WSC then faced the Missouri State Bears, who also lost their opening game. The Wildcats clawed to stay alive, but fell in straight sets 25-20, 26-24.
The team was then put into the challenge round where they squared off with the Indiana State Sycamores. After falling behind again, losing set one 25-19, the Wildcats learned from the past match to pull off the reverse sweep in dramatic fashion, winning the last two sets by scores of 25-23, 15-13.
WSC got placed in the silver bracket and was set for a date with Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday. WSC comfortably won set one 25-16 before the Bears forced a decisive set after winning set two 25-18. WSC controlled set three and defeated the Bears 15-10 in the final frame.
The second game of tournament play say WSC face off with the Bears of Missouri State again. The Wildcats were able to take the first set 25-23, but the Bears fought their way through WSC, reverse sweeping them by winning sets two and three 25-19, 15-10 respectively.
WSC finishes the tournament 2-3 while taking four of their five contests to extra sets.
The club volleyball team will be back in action on Thursday, April 17 until Saturday, April 19 as they travel to Phoenix, Arizona to battle in the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation National Tournament.
