The Wayne State College club volleyball team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Championships from Thursday, April 17 to Saturday, April 19.
Out of 48 competing teams, the Wildcats gathered a 2-4 record while placing 25th, tying them with seven other teams for the position.
Thursday kicked off the tournament with pool play. The first match saw the Winona State Warriors oppose WSC. The Wildcats fought hard, but ultimately fell in straight sets 25-17, 25-16. The next match was against Southern Methodist University. The first set needed extra points to get decided, but the Mustangs ultimately prevailed 26-24. They went on to finish the sweep of the Wildcats by winning set two 25-18. The final match of pool play led WSC to face off with Wyoming. The Wildcats dominated set one 25-8, but the momentum quickly shifted towards the Cowgirls, who won the final two sets to pull off the mini reverse sweep 25-21, 15-8.
Friday saw WSC get put into a consolation pool with Air Force and North Dakota State. WSC was able to get wins in both of those contests in straight sets. The Flacons of Air Force put up a good fight, but the Wildcats won 25-21, 25-17. NDSU also was a good challenge for WSC, yet the result stayed the same as the Wildcats took the win 25-17, 25-23.
All the previous results led WSC to the bronze tournament bracket where they got a first round matchup with Colorado Mesa on Saturday. In a tight-knit affair that saw the two teams battle back-and-forth, it was Colorado Mesa who ended up pulling away late in both sets to sweep the Wildcats 25-22, 25-21.
The Wildcat club volleyball team finish the season 16-15, a five win improvement from a season ago. The team is thankful for all the support this season and will start to prepare for the 2025-26 season.
