Esports Transitions to the National Association of Collegiate Esports

Associate Athletic Director John Schwarte has announced a pivotal move in its competitive standing, transitioning from the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) to join the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).
The transition officially levels up WSC Esports into full varsity collegiate competition, marking a major milestone for the program as it cements its position as a premier esports hub in the Midwest.
As the featured organization dedicated to governing varsity collegiate esports across North America, NACE offers higher visibility, structured national competition, and enhanced recruitment channels for participating institutions. By competing under the NACE banner, Wayne State student-athletes will face off against other varsity esports programs across the region and country, putting the Wildcats in the public spotlight.
"Joining NACE represents an exciting new chapter in the evolution of Wayne State College Esports," Head Esports Coach Drew Kurtenbach said. "This opportunity allows us to continue transforming the student-athlete experience, growing our program, and competing at the highest level of collegiate esports. NACE shares our belief that esports can enhance the college experience by helping students develop skills, build connections, and grow as competitors and individuals. We're excited to compete for regional and national recognition while proudly representing Wayne State College."
The decision aligns with Wayne State's continued investment in student development, player growth, and premier facilities like the Esports Den—a high-performance facility housed in the Kanter Student Center. Under NACE, WSC's varsity rosters across titles such as Valorant, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Call of Duty will contend for official conference titles and national playoff berths.
"This is an exciting step to where we want to be," said Schwarte.  "We see the desire for our students to compete at a high level, so this gives them the best opportunity for just that.  NACE also enforces strict eligibility requirements, academic success standards, and provides full-time support that ensures a positive experience for the students and staff alike."
