The Wildcats of the men's rugby team has advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history. The club team showed out and dominated this past weekend in the round of 16 and quarterfinal matchup. First up with the University of Chicago, a team that upended a juggernaut program in the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point in the round of 32. Chicago, a former division II program who has had their woes in the past, seemed to have it figured out and were on a strong path to the Final Four. After a two year hiatus from the nation playing any organized 15s collegiate rugby, Chicago rebuilt and proved to be a team to beat in the Midwest. Wayne State came out and hit early, causing a number of errors and penalties for Chicago, ultimately digging them in a hole at half time with WSC leading 33-7. In the second half, WSC kept the pressure on and eliminated any hope Chicago had in a come back by shutting them out in the second half and added two more scores to their tally. Wayne State wins 45-7 and moves on to the Elite Eight and faces another well known team in country - Slippy Rock University, located in Pennsylvania. There was no slowing down the Wildcats in the quarterfinal bout. In a match where WSC controlled the ball virtually the entire match and made every opportunity count, thrashing Slippery Rock 78-10.
WSC will head down to Houston, TX for the Final Four where they will meet #18 Western Oregon. WOU who last competed on November 13th in their conference championship against Gonzaga, in which they won 12-10, have not played in an official NCR post-season match heading into the Final Four. They will compete in Houston December 10th through the 12th.
