The Wayne State College men's club volleyball team traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to compete in the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Volleyball Championships from Thursday, March 18 to Saturday, April 20.
Pool play began on Thursday for the Wildcats. They were put in a pool with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institution, Western Michigan, and Georgia. Game one was against the RPI Engineers, which the Wildcats won in a three-set thriller, 14-25, 25-17, and won set three 15-9. Game two also went to three sets against the Western Michigan Broncos, which WSC pulled out again, 25-19, 20-25, 15-10. A tough game three against Georgia saw WSC get swept at the hands of the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-15.
Friday saw the Wildcats enter the challenge round against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans. Another tight three set game was in store for WSC, but much like the previous two, they prevailed in the decisive set 23-25, 25-21, 15-12. Friday continued by putting the qualifying teams into pools of three, where the Wildcats got paired with the Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Illinois State Redbirds. Both matches proved to be tough competition for WSC, as the Wildcats lost both matchups in sweeps. The final scores read 25-19, 25-17 against App State and 25-13, 25-17 against the Redbirds.
With the results from the previous two dates, Saturday saw WSC get placed on the Bronze bracket and drew a first round matchup with the Montana State Bobcats, who were 2-4 at this point in the tournament. The Wildcats ended up exiting bracket play early with a sweep at the hands of the Bobcats, 25-16, 25-19. This led the Wildcats to finish with a 3-4 record in the tournament and led them to a 21st place overall finish.
