Club Baseball falls short versus South Dakota

| By:
The Wayne State Club Baseball team hosted the South Dakota Coyotes in a doubleheader this past Thursday.

Ryan Roesler got the game one start for the Wildcats. In two innings of work, Roesler allowed only one hit and one walk, but it was good enough for two earned runs for the Coyotes. Roesler struck out three of his six recorded outs, before being replaced by Dylan Christensen. The 'Cats had this planned from the beginning however, in an attempt to save arms for their weekend series with Northwest Missouri State. Christensen came in and threw two scoreless innings, striking out one, and not allowing a baserunner.

Karson Sander entered to start the fifth inning, where he also retired the side in order, but faced trouble in the sixth. Despite only allowing one hit and no walks, errors drastically hurt Wayne State. South Dakota managed to scrape two runs across the plate, then the Cats went to the bullpen with two outs in an effort to shut down the Coyotes run. Canton Lippincott was tasked with getting the out, but wasn't able to do it. Errors once again plagued Wayne State's defense. Lippincott allowed five runs, none of which were earned. Keithan Stafford was then summoned to get the final out, and did so by striking out the only batter he faced.

Wayne State had five team RBI's, with Christensen leading the team with two. He was 2-4 in the first game. Other players with one RBI were Kaden Ritz, Devin Hegge, and Zane Shearman. Jordan Oviedo led the team with three runs scored in his 1-2 performance.

In total, the Cats collected seven hits on 25 plate appearances, but fell short to the Coyotes, 5-9.

Game two was neck-to-neck from the beginning. Wayne State carried the lead throughout the majority of the game, but South Dakota managed to put together a big four run inning in the top half of the fifth, giving them a 7-5 lead. Wayne State refused to back down however, scoring two runs in the bottom half to tie it up. Due to an agreement made by the teams and umpires prior to the start of the inning, the game was called after the fifth, ending a 7-7 tie. This was both team's first tie of the season.

Game two stats were not made available.

The Wildcats record now sits at 1-6-1. The Wildcats are next in action this weekend, when they host the Bearcats from Northwest Missouri State.
