The Wayne State College club baseball team competed at Hank Overin Field in Wayne this weekend, suffering a three-game series sweep at the hand of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles.
The series started with a single game played on the night of Saturday, April 13. The Eagles were quick to get on the scoreboard, plating one in the first and two in the second. The second inning runs where matched by the Wildcats, as they were also able to bring two runs home. The scoring took a pause until the fifth inning, where the Eagles added some insurance to their lead, scoring one more run. The Wildcats answered this run i the bottom half of the sixth, as they headed to the seventh only down one. The Eagles did not stop adding to their lead, however, as the final frame saw them add two more runs to give them a three run advantage. WSC only scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, as the comeback effort feel short, losing 6-4 in game one.
Sunday, April 14 saw doubleheader action between the Eagles and Wildcats, and Sunday was all La Crosse. They outscored the Wildcats 37-9 in the two games, winning game two of the series 21-3 and the series finale 16-6. Over the two game period, WSC only combined for ten hits while making seven errors, including six in the 21-3 loss in the first leg of the doubleheader.
WSC sees their record fall to 4-12 on the season, and 1-5 in spring competition. The Wildcats will be closing out their season against the University of Wisconsin Badgers in Monona, Wisconsin and DeForest, Wisconsin on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday April 21.
