Wildcats Split Games with Creighton

The Wayne State Club Baseball team hosted the Creighton Bluejays in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Sunday game has been postponed to the spring.

Wayne State and Creighton played each other close at Hank Overin Field in Wayne. Creighton took the first game, 6-4, but Wayne State snagged the second, 3-2. Ryan Roesler was granted the Game 1 start for the Wildcats. Roesler had a quality start, going six innings and striking out seven. He allowed four runs, only one earned, on two walks and five hits. Dylan Christensen came in for relief. Christensen had a rocky outing, letting up two earned runs on two walks and two hits. He struck out one.

The Wildcats tallied five hits and drew one walk in the first game. Jordan Oviedo had one RBI in the game, which came in the second inning when he was hit by a pitch, one of seven the 'Cats drew. Oviedo was hit twice, as well as Roesler and Austin Tramp. Andy Kirindongo followed suit by drawing one.

Kaden Ritz led the 'Cats in RBI's and hits in the first game, tallying two in each category. Kirindongo also had two hits. Ritz kicked off the comeback bid for the Wildcats in the bottom half of the seventh when he sent the first pitch he saw to the grass for a two-RBI double. However, he remained stranded on the base paths for Wayne State as the Bluejays secured the final out and the win.

Game 2 was a different story. Keithan Stafford was given the nod and sent to the hill for the Wildcats. Stafford showed out in an impressive outing, throwing a complete game and only yielding two runs to the Bluejays of Creighton. Stafford didn't walk a batter. He also helped himself with a bat in his hands, going 1-3 with a stolen base in the game. No errors and solid offensive play led Wayne State in this one.

The Wildcats garnered six hits and drew two walks in the second go-round. Zane Shearman led the Wildcats in the hitting category with a 2-3 performance. Roesler was 1-3 with a 2-RBI double in an action-packed fifth inning. Creighton scored the first run of the game in the top half, but Wayne State responded with three runs in the bottom. Ritz had the other RBI for Wayne State on a sacrifice fly, making his RBI total for the day three. Ritz also kept pressure on the Creighton pitching staff the entire game, stealing two bags.

Creighton managed to drag one more run across in the sixth, but Stafford quickly shut the door on the Bluejays and helped Wayne State walk away with a 3-2 win.
