Wayne State Club Baseball Runner Ups at Flint Hills Fall Classic

| By:
The Wayne State Club Baseball team traveled to Manhattan, Kansas to compete in the Flint Hills Fall Classic. The team played five games in the tournament, going 2-3, but placing second.

In their opener Friday night, the Wildcats faced Arkansas. Arkansas jumped out to an early start on Wildcat starting pitcher Bradley Howe, scoring four runs in the first two innings. Arkansas tacked on two more in the top of the fifth before junior Caleb Meyer came in for relief. Wayne State scored one in the bottom half of the fifth, but were unable to score anymore after that. The Razorbacks tacked on two more runs in the sixth, leading the way to an 8-1 victory over the 'Cats.

The Wildcats looked to bounce back Saturday morning versus Air Force. Ethan McSpadden was given the starting duties for Wayne State. Air Force jumped out to a strong start in the bottom of the first inning, tacking on four runs. They had no plans of stopping there as their offensive barrage continued, scoring seven more runs in the next three innings. Canton Lippincott would come into relief for McSpadden in the fourth inning, allowing two runs on three hits. Wayne State had five hits in the game, two of which came from senior Ryan Roesler. The Wildcats would manage to score one in the top half of the fifth, but due to the 10-run rule, the game would end there with a final score of 11-1.

Saturday afternoon, bracket play started and the seventh-seeded Wildcats put their ace Ethan McKenna on the mound to start against second-seeded Kansas State. It was a pitcher's duel through the first two innings before the Wayne State offense exploded in the top of the third. The 'Cats scored nine runs with the help of RBIs from Keithan Stafford, Zach Tesarek, Andy Kirindongo, Drew McIntosh, Lippincott, and McSpadden. Kansas State would scrape one run across in the bottom half, but that would be all before McKenna shut them down once again. Wayne State would get that run right back in the top of the fourth. A quiet fifth inning led to a three-run top of the sixth inning for the Wildcats of Wayne State, putting them ahead 13-1. McKenna would surrender one run in the bottom of the sixth. McKenna allowed two runs on four hits and five walks, while striking out six Kansas State batters in a complete game six inning performance that was ended early due to the 10-run rule, this time in the favor of Wayne State.

The Sunday morning semifinal put the Wildcats up against MSU-Denver. Both teams came out firing in the first inning, with Wayne State holding a 2-1 lead after the first inning. Denver would gain the lead after posting a three-run second. However, the Wildcats didn't let that stand for long, as the bats once again came alive in the top of the third where the Wildcats scored five. An RBI double from Dylan Christensen cut the Denver lead to one, before Zane Shearman brought him in with an RBI double. Jordan Oviedo would then work the count into his favor, tripling on a 3-1 pitch, scoring Shearman and giving Wayne State the lead. Stafford would then bring in Oviedo with an RBI groundout before ending the inning with a 7-4 Wayne State lead. In the bottom half of the third, Roesler would come in to pitch and post a scoreless bottom half in each of the third and fourth innings. Denver was not ready to go away just yet, beginning to threaten in the fifth. Two runs would score, cutting the Wildcat lead to 7-6. In the top half of the seventh, the Wildcats got some insurance from their offense, increasing the lead to two. Roesler would close out the game for the Wildcats after posting a two hit, two run performance in five innings of work, earning himself the win.

The championship game slated Wayne State versus the top-seeded Missouri S&T Miners, who were fresh off a 15-5 win over Kansas State. Wayne State jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead off an RBI single from Lippincott, scoring Tesarek. Roesler would start for the Wildcats. He allowed one run in the bottom of the first, allowing the Miners to tie the game. Both teams posted goose eggs in the second. In the third inning, the Miners held Wayne State scoreless, but scored three of their own. McKenna came in to relieve for the Wildcats in the bottom half of the third. He would pitch into the fourth inning before being pulled for Christensen. Christensen had a rocky outing, letting up six runs on four hits and two walks. Meyer would come in and record an out for the Wildcats before Denver scored their eleventh run of the ballgame, ending it in the sixth.

Wayne State moves to 3-4 on the season and will next be in action Saturday, October 22nd to face Wisconsin-La Crosse in Wisconsin.
