The Wayne State College men's club volleyball team competed in the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Crossover Tournament this past weekend. The Wildcats went 3-4 and took home an 8th place finish out of 34 teams.
The Wildcats kicked off tournament play on Saturday with a regional challenge game against the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars B team, which WSC was able to win in straight sets.
The Wildcats now entered pool play in pool C. Their first game came against the Missouri State University Bears. The Wildcats ended up on the wrong end of this one, losing in straight sets after hard fought effort. The second game of pool play came against SIUE's A team, which the Wildcats also dropped in straight sets. WSC bounced back in the final pool play game against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks B team, winning in straight sets.
After pool play, WSC entered a seed challenge game against the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. The winner of this match was to play in the gold bracket for the overall title, while the losing team was sent to the silver bracket. The Wildcats advanced to the gold bracket with a straight set win over the Huskers.
Bracket play started on Sunday, and the Wildcats' quest to bring home the gold started with a familiar opponent in SIUE. The Wildcats ended up forcing a decisive 3rd set, but fell just short in a three set loss. The Wildcats got another game in tournament play against the Kansas Universe Jayhawks, where WSC fell in straight sets to take home an 8th place finish.
The Wildcats have a month of rest before the Midwest Plains Volleyball Conference Championships on April 1-2 in Chesterfield, Missouri.
