Baseball Goes Undefeated at NCBA Swing into Spring

    The Wayne State College club baseball team swept the competition, going 5-0 at the National Club Baseball Association's Swing Into Spring Tournament from March 7 to March 9. This pushes the Wildcats to 10-8 overall for the 2022-2023 season. 
    The first game at the tournament pitted the Wildcats against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning, and exploded for five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to earn a mercy rule victory 11-1. This game was highlighted by Liandry Kirindongo, who went 2-for-2 at the plate while working two walks and one stolen base. Starting pitcher Mitchell Peatrowsky was credited with the win after allowing only one run in four innings of work.
    The Wildcats then moved on to play the Robert Morris Colonials. Both team plated runs in the first inning, with the Colonials scoring one in teh top half and the Wildcats scoring three in the bottom half. Neither teams scored another run until the fifth inning, with each side plating an extra run. The Wildcats added some insurance runs in the sixth to make the score 6-2. RMU scored one run in teh seventh, but couldn't complete the comeback effort as the Wildcats take home a 6-3 victory. Keithan Stafford earned the win after pitching allowing two runs, one unearned, and striking out six hitters in six innings.
    Entering day two, the Wildcats first opponent was set to be the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Wildcats answered back, scoring four runs in the third and one run in the fourth to give them a 5-2 lead. The Panthers answered with a run in the fifth, but that was all they scored, giving WSC a 5-3 win. Zane Sherman was the hitting star, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
    Game number two on Wednesday, and game number four overall, saw WSC face-to-face with the Toledo Rockets. The Wildcats as a team hit 20-for-29, plating 20 runs, including 10 of those in the second inning, in what was a 20-3 blowout win for the Wildcats. The Wildcats as a team hit five doubles and one home run hit by Jordan Oveido.
    The fifth and final game of the tournament pit the Wildcats against the Edinboro Universty of Pennsylvania Fighting Scots. The bats for WSC were hot in tehis contest as well, socring three runs in the first and second innings each, five in the third, and four in the fourth as the Wildcats mercy rule the Fighting Scots 15-4. Another big game for Sherman saw him hit 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Behind him, Kaden Ritz and Mykah Folkers each dorve home three runs. As a team, WSC also managed to steal 10 bags. 
    Ritz was also credited with NCBA player of the week.
    The Wildcats are back in action against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 25, and finish the series on Sunday, March 26. All games will be played at Hank Overin Field in Wayne, Nebraska.
