The Wayne State College club disc golf team traveled down south to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to compete in the College Disc Golf National Championships from Wednesday, April 3 to Saturday, April 6. The team placed 77th out of 80 teams competing at the event.
The Wildcats brought four players to the competition;
Chris Ulrich,
Byron Carrera,
Caleb Jenkinson, and
Blake Austin. The team played both as individuals in a single round event and a four-round team event.
The team event was the main spectacle, as 80 teams were set to compete for a national title. Round one was played at Westminster Park East, to which the Wildcats shot a 54 which was good for a -5 score on the course. Round two was played at Camp Canaan Riverbend, and unlike round one, the Wildcats struggled on this course, shooting a 77 for a +16 score, giving them a score of +11 through two rounds. Round three was held at Winthrop Lakefront, where WSC shot a 67 for a +6 score and round four, held back at Westminster Park East, WSC shot a 60 for a +1. Totaling all the round gave the Wildcats an overall score of +18, making them 77th out of 80 competing teams.
During the individual round, Ulrich led the Wildcats after a round of 74 on the par 61 course, meaning he finished with a score of +13. Ulrich finished 277th out of 319 individual competitors. Following him, Jenkinson shot a 75 for a +14, Carrera shot a 76 for a +15, and Austin shot an 81 for a score of +20.
This event brings a close to the WSC disc golf season.
